One passion, two countries and hundreds of stories. About partnership of Sharikompaniet (Sweden) and Society for Animation and Children’s Drama Creativity (Serbia).

Several years ago we got to know each other when working in another project. As we kept in touch we gradually discovered our common passion; how to encourage and strengthen youth through arts and theatre, making these artistic instruments accessible for a young audience.

However, our tasks seldom touch upon the sole process of just producing or writing a play or film. Merely we occupy our creative processes with constant challenges of ethical responsibility. How to treat documentary material? What is essential when it comes to the portrayal of young people coming from troubled backgrounds tell us in film, theatre and television? How do we avoid prejudices and doing it the mainstream way? Curious and eager to listen to these young, brave and talented people that participate in our productions, we approach an anthropological perspective. We hope that this among other factors, helps us to reject to paint in black/white and challenges us with something dynamic and complex.

No social injustices or problems in the world could be resolved with a theatre performance. However, we hope our work might motivate new thoughts, reflections and perhaps alter the dimension of our personal looking glasses.

More than a year ago, ideas were discussed and elaborated in two countries and now PETAR is to follow from FELICIA, introducing us to two widely different social contexts and lives. Both of them, though, move us towards art as the essential space for fighting stigma and let emerging social issues be spoken out about.

Shari Sabel Strandmark, director Sharikompaniet (Sweden) director, producer and creator of story for FELICIA.
Milorad Jovanovic, director Society for Animation and Children’s Drama Creativity (Serbien) and producer for PETAR.

Felicia

Felicia (2013)

Theatre performance, 40 min. Created by Shari Sabel Strandmark and Moa Silen. Inspired by interviews with women aged 17-25, who grew up with abusive parents.

”So many times I’ve been at home wonder where my dad is. Thinking; he should have been home a long time ago. I wonder where he is, what he’s doing, if he’s alive. There’ve been so many times where I thought; No, he’s dead, because he’s fallen on the track or he’s jumped from the bridge. I do not know…why doesn’t he answer his phone?”

Reference person, 21, FELICIA project.

We meet Felicia, 21, who tells us her life story. In a conversation with the audience Felicia talks about loneliness, responsibility and concern, but also about laughter and love. She desperately hopes that her father will one day stop drinking and become well. How is it possible to miss someone you see every day?

The FELICIA group responsible for this project is an independent part of Sharikompaniet. The FELICIA group was formed in 2012 by six people aged 18-30 on the basis of a common desire to break the stigma and taboo that thousands of young people experience through living with one or two parents who abuse drugs or alcohol. The group’s work is based on four of its members’ own lives and experiences.

The production is cooperating with ESS-gymnasiet, Ersta Vändpunkten, Maskrosbarn, Gertrude & Ivar Philipsons Stiftelse, Svenska Institutet, Society for animation and development of children’s drama creativity in Serbia as well as Skandia Idéer för livet-stiftelsen.

A WARM THANKS to all of the young women who shared their experiences with us. Without your participation this performance would not have been possible.

Hedda

Hedda! (2011)

Based upon Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen.

WHAT DO YOU SEE?
By director Shari Sabel Strandmark:

I have a strong memory of two images from my high school psychology book. One image showed a vase of flowers in a window. The second image was painted by a person with schizophrenia who had been asked to recreate the image. His painting looked nothing like the first image. I was curious to find out the reasoning behind his painting. In the making of HEDDA! I asked the cast to paint a small peacock which I had placed on a table. However, instead of having them simply paint a peacock I asked them to paint what they associate with a peacock and then explain why.

Just as in the case of the images in my psychology book, few people will recognize Henrik Ibsens original Hedda Gabler in our version of Hedda! Our answer is that we tried to twist, turn, and compress the essence of Ibsen’s version to recreate the 2011 version of Hedda!
